Moving to a new country at nineteen is a daunting prospect under any circumstances; doing so right as a global lockdown begins is a trial by fire. Arriving in the United Kingdom from South Africa, I carried a singular, driving ambition: to find a way to change the world, even if only in a small way.

Like many, my entry into the working world was shaped by the sudden reality of 2020. I secured a standard 9-to-5 job, putting in the hours day after day. But the economic aftermath of the pandemic spared few. When the company eventually went bankrupt, it marked the beginning of a punishing cycle.

Job after job fell through as wave after wave of businesses closed their doors in the post-COVID landscape. I found myself trapped in a deep, dark hole of prolonged unemployment. With no prior experience in the specific skill sets employers were hunting for, my enthusiasm, knowledge, and potential were repeatedly overlooked. Year after year ticked by. I lived on the bare minimum, caught in an exhausting daily search for stability, sliding deeper into emotional turmoil as doors slammed shut.

The Spark of a New Direction

In the midst of this heavy fog, I stumbled upon content exploring the world of candles and the meditative art of fragrance creation. At a time when my mindset was battered, the idea of having a hands-on hobby offered a quiet glimmer of hope.
